6 Tips for Working From Home Effectively

tips for working from home

With the coronavirus pandemic, more people are working from home to help slow down the spread of the virus. Working from home is cool at many levels, but it’s not for everyone. And, if it’s new to you, it may be hard to be disciplined and productive. I’ve been working my full-time job from home for 15 years, and there are pros and cons. But I love it, and I don’t know if I could ever go back to a corporate office environment!ย Here are six tips for working from home that will help you be successful, whether it’s temporary or permanent!

Get dressed Every Day

Studies show that getting ready not only boosts your mood and self-confidence but also helps you be more productive too! Check outย my post on reasons to get dressed each dayย for more on this.

Have a Designated Workspace

Whether you have an extra room for an office or not, you need a designated workspace for your desk and some organizers so you can keep everything in its place. You want a space that feels good to you to be efficient.

Stay in Contact

Be intentional with your communication with your co-workers. When your team is virtual, it’s easy to stay in your work zone and never reach out. Whether via a phone call or IM, chatting with your co-workers is how you keep those bonds strong.

Take a Lunch Break

While we can’t go anywhere right now, a break from your work is needed every day. If you are able, go for a walk around your neighborhood, jump rope in your driveway, or plant some spring flowers. At the very least, make yourself a nice lunch, but don’t eat at your desk.

Stay Disciplined

Create a weekly to-do list and break it down by day. Use your calendar to schedule time blocks to work on specific tasks. I am on the phone 75% of the day, plan my conference calls in the morning, and leave the afternoons for tactical and project work. If you are going to sneak in a few household chores, schedule them on your calendar so you don’t lose track of time.

Communication Tips

Let your kids and significant other know when you will be on a conference or video call. You don’t want anyone barging in screaming “mom” while you’re on the phone with a client or business partner. Use your headphones, so your hands are free to type or write notes. And don’t forget to mute the phone when you are not speaking!

Muting the phone is a great reminder! We had a 400+ person teleconference last week and it was hilarious hearing all the kids in the background. Being home is totally new for people in my field.

  7. These are awesome tips, Jill! I have been admittedly NOT getting dressed every day, haha. Lots of loungewear! But I do have a designated work space and it’s IMMENSELY helpful. I definitely couldn’t do this work from the couch.

Hope you’re staying safe + well!

  21. These are great suggestions (though I think on the dress up one I’m still going to be wearing slippers rather than real shoes) and it really does affect the way you approach your work and how productive you are. I’m not working from home yet (but I have in the past) and it’s so easy to get distracted by home things. Thanks so much for sharing!
