Documentaries and Series

Tiger King There are more tigers in captivity than in the wild, and this docuseries focuses on the big cat industry and the egomaniac owners that run them.

The Stranger Based on a novel by Harlan Coben, this thriller series has lots of plot twists, with each episode zooming out until the story finally unwinds.

The Staircase is A true crime documentary following novelist Michael Peterson, convicted of murdering his wife, and his two-decade battle with the justice system.

Black Mirror is sci-fi anthology series that examines modern society and the consequences of technology. It reminds me of a modern-day Twilight Zone.

Goop Lab Behind the scenes of Gweneth Paltrow’s wellness company, Goop, has faced criticism for misleading marketing around products.

Jack Ryan is a Political spy thriller series based on characters created by Tom Clancy. Jack Ryan is a CIA analyst launched into the center of a dangerous field assignment.

Making the Cut If you’re a Project Runway fan, this is Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn’s new fashion competition show. And if you love the fashion, you can immediately purchase the winning pieces after each episode.

Homecoming – Julia Roberts, a counselor at a military transition support center, helps soldiers transition to civilian life. After she leaves and starts a new life, she realizes there is another story behind the one she believes.

Hannah – is a coming of age thriller about a girl raised in the forest in Poland by her father and her pursuit to find out the truth behind who she is.

Dirty Money  This series tells stories of corporate corruption, securities fraud, and creative accounting.

Dead to Me I’m a huge Christina Applegate fan, and she plays a recently widowed real estate agent trying to come to terms with the loss of her husband, who was killed in a hit-and-run accident. She’s on a mission to fund out who did it as another story unfolds along the way.

I am afraid of running out of shows to watch and even more – what will entertainment look like next year when there are no new shows and movies? Man, this thing is so far reaching. I’ll have to check out some of these shows, some I have seen and some I haven’t, I may need to revisit those John Hughes movies of my youth!

  3. I think the only two I’ve watched on your list is Dead To Me and Black Mirror. I loved both of those shows. I’ve heard so many mixed reviews about The Stranger. I have little children living with me now, so that limits what shows I can have on. I watched Locke & Key and really enjoyed that. I’m currently watching Anne with an E, which is Netflix’s new liberal version of Anne of Green Gables. I will have to go back and watch the original Anne of Green Gables for comparison. I like Anne with an E but I’m not sure if some of the subject matter is appropriate for younger audiences. I really wish Netflix would create more family friendly programing.

Jill, this is so great! I’m so ready for the next season of Dead to Me! I loved it! And I absolutely love this list. Mr. Nine and I would just say we need to do a binge of all the John Hughes films! We’ve seen several of the series but you gave me some great new ideas! Great Post! Cheers!

Not watched any of those shows but a couple episodes of Jack Ryan, watched all of the John Hughes movies and seen a couple of the fashion movies. Nice list.

  29. I haven’t watched Zoolander in years! But it was always one of my faves. Dying to see Tiger King. I actually didn’t realise it was about the animals in captivity. The way everyone carries on I thought it was a doco-drama on the “owners”

  33. Great list, Jill! Who in our generation doesn’t love John Hughes films?! I wish my kids were old enough to appreciate them! We are going to rent Trolls 2 World Tour tonight and order pizza for movie night!

  34. It is a docu-drama and the tiger owners are pretty eccentric!

  35. This is a great list! I don’t have Netflix so I haven’t seen Tiger King yet, but I did watch a TMZ special on it the other day and it was really interesting! I feel so bad for those tigers.
