Natural Beauty the Green Way

Sustainability is a word on everyone’s lips. From reducing the amount of plastic we use to recycling and repurposing, it’s something we need to take seriously.

There’s plenty we can do to be part of a force for change in the beauty industry. You can buy and create beauty products that make a positive or zero impact on the environment.

Natural Hair Products

There are plenty of retailers selling natural products but have you considered creating your own? You can recycle your existing shampoo bottles and reduce your shopping bill while giving your hair a break from the chemicals you find in many products.

Try these simple recipes for a shampoo and conditioner that will leave your hair feeling soft and shiny:

Shampoo – in a bowl measure half a cup of water, half a cup of vegetable-based liquid soap, a teaspoon of light vegetable oil (don’t use if you have oily hair) and two or three drops of essential oil. Mix together. It’s that easy. You have a natural shampoo that will work just as well as in-store products, for a fraction of the price.

Conditioner –  for a deep condition, mix together a combination of coconut oil and mashed banana or avocado. Comb through the mid to end sections of your hair after shampooing and wrap in a towel. Leave for around 20 minutes and then wash in lukewarm water.

Alternatively, pick up a shampoo bar from your nearest health store and use it as a replacement for products that come in bottles.

Cosmetic Products

When it comes to cosmetics, it can be hard to find an ethical option that beats your favoritelong-lasting matte lipstick. You can create beauty products at home, and it’s easy to find recipes online for anything from hair masks to scrubs.

It’s worth searching for cruelty-free and vegan products. Sometimes you may need to go through a little trial and error. By purchasing from companies that make as little impact on the environment as they can with sustainable manufacturing practices, you are reducing your carbon footprint.

Going greener doesn’t mean you need to compromise on quality. Have fun experimenting with making your own products, reduce and recycle plastic bottles. Say no to companies that have excessive packaging. Take a stand and enjoy beauty products guilt-free. Spread the word and make sustainability a part of your every day.
