How to Style a One Shoulder Dress This Summer

how to style one shoulder dress

The one-shoulder aesthetic has cycled in and out of fashion for decades. Halston freed our shoulders back in the 1970s with his timeless one-shoulder gowns. Then a decade later, in the 1980s, one-shoulder dresses were the must-have style for wedding parties. Fast forward to the 1990s, and off-the-shoulder and strapless dresses were trending. In the early 2000s, they were popular again with the addition of embellished details. And now, once again, one-shoulder dresses have become a key wardrobe staple this summer.

If you remember my April Amazon Haul, I added this one-shoulder floral print maxi dress to my closet. It fits true to size (for reference, I’m wearing a small) and comes in 15 color/print options. One of the benefits of this style of dress is that it allows you to be comfortable showing a little bit of skin without fully baring both shoulders in a strapless design. Plus, the asymmetrical cut is flattering and adds interest to the neckline.

Today I’m sharing how to style a one shoulder dress this summer for your casual daytime plans and dressed up for a night out.

One Shoulder Dress Styled Casually

A white button-up is one of the best choices for a summer layering piece. It’s light enough that you won’t be overheated if the temps rise, yet will keep you comfortable if it’s breezy or if you are inside with air conditioning. For daytime wear, opt for sneakers to dress down the look.

Another way to style a one shoulder dress is to layer a button-up over it. It’s an effortless way to make the dress work appropriate. Just swap out the sneakers for mules or heels. For more white button-up ideas, download my free styling guide here.

One Shoulder Dress Styled for a Night Out

A one shoulder neckline frames your face, and pulling your hair back always looks classic and chic. And, since the one shoulder is already making a statement, keep jewelry simple with a dainty necklace and hoop earrings. Complete the look with timeless accessories like black sunglasses, wedge sandals and a chain-strap handbag.
