How to Create Outfits from Shopping Your Closet

how to create outfits from your closet

Have you ever found yourself staring at your closet, convinced you have absolutely nothing to wear? Trust me, you’re not alone. But before you head out to a local boutique or the nearest mall or spend hours browsing online, let’s talk about a secret weapon that can refresh your wardrobe without costing a penny: shopping your closet. It’s all about looking at your existing clothes with fresh eyes and a bit of creativity. So, today’s post is about how to create outfits from your closet.

How to Get Inspired

The easiest and number one is Pinterest. It’s a goldmine for outfit ideas. Create boards dedicated to looks you love and try to recreate them using pieces you already own. I also get lots of inspiration from the accounts I follow on Instagram.

Another one of my favorite sources for outfit inspiration is catalogs. Flip through the pages and take note of the outfits that catch your eye. Pay attention to the styling, the color combinations, and the layering techniques.

To give you some ideas, I thought it would be fun to recreate a few of the outfits from pages I tore out of the Evereve catalog. Here are five outfits I put together with pieces already in my closet!

Outfit Recreations from the Evereve Catalog

Mesh Sweater + Cut Off Shorts

When I flipped to this page in the catalog, I thought, oh, that’s cute for a cooler summer day. I had a mesh sweater I hadn’t worn in a few years and completely forgot about. I posted four ways to wear it here, and this was one of the original combos I shared.

Black Top + Denim Skirt

I had everything hanging in my closet to nail this look. I don’t know why I don’t wear my denim midi skirts more often. They’re so easy to dress up or down.

Striped Sweater + Black Shorts

This is a classic neutral outfit you can wear for almost anything. I didn’t have a mesh sweater, but I did have a white and tan striped one. I also discovered I don’t have black denim shorts, so I chose a drawstring pair.

Tailored Vest + Slouchy Denim

I’ve worn this outfit several times and always get compliments. The tailored vest trend is going strong and they look especially great with jeans.

Blue Striped Pullover + Utility Shorts

This is such a simple casual look, yet still looks put together. Instead of a quarter zip, I had a blue and white striped sweater. My utility shorts are from Everlane and a great summer basic.

What do you think? It can be easy to get caught up in the idea that we need new clothes to feel stylish, but the truth is, we probably have everything we need. The goal of shopping your closet is to make the most of what you already have. Don’t feel pressured to follow every trend. Instead, focus on what makes you feel confident and comfortable.

I hope this post on creating new outfits from your old clothes was helpful! Let me know in the comments where you find outfit inspiration!

  1. I love Evereve so recreating their looks is a great idea! You look so chic in all these outfits. That crochet sweater is calling my name!

The Evereve catalog always inspires me! I re-created those same outfits using things in my closet. It's funny because I
probably would not have done it otherwise! So much inspiration out there, thanks for the reminders!

It's funny: the vest look, I have copied for a blog post coming up soon, using that same picture! And the skirt and black top too! I love finding inspiration everywhere I can and have some similar posts coming up. Shopping ones closet can be pretty fun!

  4. Jill, your recreations are better than the Evereve outfits! Despite my personal feelings towards that brand, they always put together cute looks.  Anyway! I have so many pieces in my wardrobe that I need to wear more often, and your post has given me the inspiration to do so! XO

  5. This deserves a standing ovation. Our closets are gold mines and we can mix and match wonderfully if we use our noggins,

  6. You did a great job creating outfits from inspiration photos! I often head to Pinterest for my ideas since I don't seem to get any clothing catalogs of any kind anymore.

  7. Yes to all of this! I also use my blogger friends as inspiration. For example I am going to use your last outfit as inspiration to recreate the stripes and utility shorts outfit! Stay tuned and I'll be sure to tag you.

  8. I get a lot of inspiration from other bloggers and on IG. Love that you show where you got your inspiration from!

  9. Love to see how you made these outfits come to life! I've often found that when I see something I like (in a catalog, on IG, etc.), I tend to already have something similar in my wardrobe. This is such a good reminder to shop my own closet first!

This is great and you did a wonderful job at your recreations! I often just forget about Pinterest, to be honest with you. I need to check them out more often. I will look up ways to wear on Google at times, but that is a good idea.
