The long cargo skirt is making a comeback, and I’m here for it. With its roots in utilitarian design, cargo skirts were all the rage in the 1990s and have now returned better than ever as a versatile and stylish wardrobe essential this fall. Today I’m sharing how to style a cargo skirt three ways.
When I found this cargo skirt at Target, it immediately went into my cart. The longer maxi length, relaxed fit, and lightweight fabric combine comfort and style. The utilitarian details add a stylish edge that differentiates it from a traditional midi or maxi skirt. And you can’t beat the versatility. Dress it up or down. It transitions seamlessly from summer to fall. This long cargo skirt runs true to size, and I’m wearing an XS for reference. If the olive color is not your jam, it also comes in cream and black.
Cargo Skirt Outfit Ideas
everyday casual
I know I’ll usually wear my cargo skirt casually, so this look is up first. Since it’s still warm during the day but cooler in the evening, I styled this cargo skirt outfit with a ribbed tank top (these are my favorites from Old Navy), shrug sweater, baseball cap, and sneakers. I added a gold statement necklace to add a little more detail and contrast against the black top.

for a night out
This is still a casual look but a little bit dressier with some additional edgy details. I’d wear this out with girlfriends or for date night. My Chelsea boots are always in my fall footwear rotation (see 10 Ways to Wear Chelsea Boots) and are currently on sale here. This will be my 3rd season wearing them – they have worn so well and are still like new. A mock neck top is a good fall transition option because you can easily layer a cardigan or denim jacket over it if it gets chilly. Finally, I added a belt to dress up and complete the look.

Dressed Up for Work
If you’re wondering if you can style a cargo skirt for the office, the answer is yes! I added a cowl-neck tank top, cropped blazer, belt, and heeled tall boots to elevate the skirt and make it office appropriate. This would also be another great option for a night out.
