Our daughter had a break from swimming for a few weeks, and we found a cabin in Michigan to rent. But then time passed, and the place was no longer available, so what to do? We decided to head to downtown Chicago for a weekend getaway instead. We moved to the suburbs ten years ago, and I still miss living in the city. Usually, at this point of the summer, we would have made it downtown at least 4 or 5 times, but since we haven’t been at all, this was the perfect alternative.
We stayed on Michigan Avenue to be close to the beach, restaurants, shopping, and the buses to take us to the museums. While we never made it to the beach or the architectural cruise due to the temps in the 60s, instead, we hit the museums and ate some amazing food!
Argo has the best chocolate mint tea! They have a little outdoor garden that we hung out in for a while.
My husband and daughter love cars, so we stopped by Perillo to look at the Lamborghini’s and Ferrari’s. It’s funny, our daughter knows her expensive cars, but I don’t think she could point out a Honda Accord.
While my husband was chatting with one of the guys, they let our daughter climb in for a photo. The red car above had just sold for $600K!
Fourth Presbyterian Church
The Fourth Presbyterian is such a beautiful church and has gorgeous stained glass. We attended church services here a few times when we lived in the city, so I wanted our daughter to see it since she was too young to remember.
Chicago Restaurants
Joe’s Seafood
I wanted to try a few new restaurants, but we went to the same old favorites – Joe’s for fresh seafood. I had a delicious lobster roll for dinner!
Side Door
Owned by Lawry’s Prime Rib, the Side Door had a rustic lounge-type atmosphere with jazz playing in the background. The menu offered carved meats and some amazing appetizers. We tried the poutine. While not a health-friendly dish, the poutine was to die for! It’s french fries with beef bacon gravy, pepper jack cheese, avocado & roasted tomatoes.
The Museum of Contemporary Art
It was cold and rainy day two, so we hit the museums. The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) was within walking distance from the hotel. The MCA is one of Chicago’s top museums. It features rotating exhibitions by contemporary artists from around the world. The MCA also hosts special events throughout the year.
A permanent exhibit of Alexander Calder mobiles and sculptures is on display.
An interesting exhibit of masks in front of mirrors. Everyone was taking photos. Kind of creepy but cool!
The museum shop had these fun jelly bracelets in every color!
I’m not going to complain about the cold after the polar vortex last winter, but it was time to switch the chocolate mint iced tea to hot.
Here’s our city selfie!
Day three was sunny and warm again, so we headed to Lincoln Park Zoo. I forgot to take photos, but it’s a must-see if you visit Chicago. This zoo has been open since 1868 and is home to more than 2,000 animals representing 200 species. There are also several interactive exhibits where visitors can learn about different animal habitats and how they live.
That’s a wrap of our Chicago weekend getaway! It was so nice to be in the city again and have a relaxing few days!
