Do you have clothes you wear outside of the house but not inside? Or how about clothes that you wear indoors but don’t sleep in? Working from home has become the new norm for many of us post-COVID. I’ve been working from home for my full-time job for almost 20 years now, and I have a lot of work from home clothes that are strictly for the inside only.
Sometimes, I miss the need to dress in corporate attire of blazers and pencil skirts every morning. But I have to say, comfort and practicality suit me better. The key is finding the perfect balance between comfort, functionality, and style. Here are my tips for building a wardrobe of work-from-home clothes this summer.
What to Wear When Working from Home
The first rule of work-from-home attire is comfort. After all, one of the perks of working from home is the ability to dress more casually. But comfort doesn’t mean settling for your favorite worn-out sweats or ignoring your personal style. In fact, getting dressed and ready as if you were going into the office can boost your mood and productivity.
Lounge shorts and pants are your best friends when it comes to work-from-home attire, but my go-to lately has been two-piece sets. They take the guesswork out of getting dressed and ensure you look coordinated and put together. Plus, you instantly get three outfits by mixing and matching the pieces with other items in your wardrobe. Sets also allow you to seamlessly transition from your home office to running errands or meeting a friend for lunch without needing a complete wardrobe change.
Home Office Outfits
This first set reminds me of Santorini, Greece. I’m not sure why; maybe the white and blue colors? It’s 100% cotton and lightweight. This two-piece set comes in multiple color options including a royal blue with white trim that is really pretty. This set runs true to size.
How cute is the ric-rac trim on the top and shorts? This set is an easy one to mix and match with other things in your closet. It’s made of viscose and feels soft on your skin. It runs true to size and comes in 12 other colorways.
I have to say, I’ve been wearing this set out of the house more than indoors. It’s probably because the print gives me all the summer vibes. The top and shorts are sold separately, are made of a linen blend, and run true to size. Oh, they’re currently on clearance at Target, so grab them while you can.
This last two-piece set gives me all the vacation feels even though I’m probably not going anywhere except for a walk around the neighborhood with my dog at lunchtime. Also made from viscose, this set is light and airy. It runs true to size and comes in six other print options.
How to Dress for Virtual Meetings
Virtual meetings go hand in hand with working from home. I have at least one virtual meeting every day, sometimes four or five. While you don’t need to be as formal as you would be in an office setting, looking polished and professional is still essential when putting together your work from home clothes.
Since only your upper half is visible in virtual meetings, focus on that. Again, returning to the versatility of a two-piece set, wearing the top with any bottom or pairing the bottom with a nice blouse or a button-down shirt are all good options. Then, accessorize with a statement necklace, layered necklaces, or a scarf and statement earrings to complete the look.
Pro tip: The soft focus setting in Microsoft Teams gives your face a smoothing effect, so you can easily get by with just a little mascara and lipstick.
Okay, that’s a wrap! I hope you liked my work from home outfit guide for summer. Which outfit is your favorite? If you work from home, what do you like to wear? Let me know in the comments!
