I was reading an article the other day about fashion mistakes that will date you. Most of the tips were once again telling women over 50 what they should and should not wear. One of the no-nos was wearing black. I have to respectfully disagree. I’ve personally always loved an edgy all-black outfit, and a big chunk of my wardrobe is black. It all comes down to styling. So, today, I’ve got some tips for you on adding interest to all black outfits.
1. Statement Footwear
Shoes can totally make or break an outfit, and with an all-black look, they have the power to transform it. Consider wearing a pair of statement shoes, like these fringe sandals, leopard print booties, or even bright-colored sneakers. The shoes become the focal point of your outfit, drawing attention and adding that much-needed oomph to your overall look. Plus, theyโre a great way to express your personal style.
2. Play with Textures
One of the easiest ways to add interest to all black outfits is to add dimension by mixing up textures. Think leather with lace, denim with silk, or velvet with cotton. The contrast between different fabrics can make your outfit feel dynamic and intentional. For instance, I paired a neoprene sweatshirt with tailored pants and added a wool newsboy hat and patent oxfords. The key is to let the textures do the talking.
3. Accessorize Smartly
Accessories are your best friend when it comes to spicing up an all-black ensemble. Bold statement pieces like chunky necklaces, bracelets, or oversized earrings bring the drama.
Donโt forget about beltsโthey can break up the black and define your waist, giving your outfit some shape.
4. Incorporate Patterns
Who says black has to be solid? Patterns in blackโwhether itโs stripes, polka dots, or even a subtle floral printโcan break up the monotony and make your outfit more eye-catching. A black-and-white patterned top or a pair of black jeans with a slight texture can add just the right amount of interest. And if youโre not into bold patterns, even a subtle embossed print or a tonal pattern can do the trick.
5. Add a Pop of Color
My final tip for adding interest to all black outfits is a simple one. Adding just a small pop of color can take your all-black outfit to the next level. A bright red lip, a colorful handbag, or even a subtle hint of color in your nail polish can be just what you need to break up the black and add a touch of personality.
You donโt have to abandon your love for black to make your look pop! I hope these tips on adding interest to all black outfits were helpful! Do you like to wear black? Let me know in the comments!
