Steps to Achieve New Year Goals

steps to achieve goals

Do you make new year’s resolutions? I menioned in my newsletter the other day that I don’t really make them anymore. They always fall by the wayside by the end of February. Instead, this year, I’m setting goals for myself and to help stay on track, monthly challenges related to those goals. The difference between goals and resolutions is creating a clear plan that helps turn them into reality. Today I’m sharing steps to take to achieve your new year’s goals. I’m also sharing my low level goals for 2025. I hope these ideas inspire you!

The one thing I’ve learned over the years from my corporate job is that the foundation of achieving any goal is to make it SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. SMART goals are not just for business, you can use them in your personal life too. SMART goals provide a clear direction and ensure your objectives are realistic and achievable within a given timeframe.

For example, instead of saying, “I want to get fit,” a SMART goal would be, “I will complete two strength-training workouts and three cardio sessions weekly to feel confident wearing shorts by June.” Breaking goals down into these components gives you a precise target to aim for and a way to measure progress along the way.

To use SMART goals effectively:

  • Specific: Define exactly what you want to achieve. Avoid vague or general goals.
  • Measurable: Include metrics or milestones to track progress.
  • Achievable: Set a goal that is challenging but within reach given your resources and time.
  • Relevant: Ensure the goal aligns with your broader values and priorities.
  • Time-bound: Set a clear deadline or timeframe for achieving the goal.

Big goals can feel daunting. You can track progress and stay motivated by breaking them into smaller, manageable tasks or low-level goals. Here’s how I’ve structured my low-level goals for this year to help me achieve my big goals.

  • Perform 2–3 shoulder stretches daily
  • Schedule and attend physical therapy sessions weekly
  • Swim once a week
  • Run two times a week – start with one lap around the track and add one lap weekly
  • Celebrate fitness milestones monthly
  • Track spending using a budgeting app
  • Make one additional principal payment monthly
  • Review financial progress monthly
  • Monthly goal: no spend February
  • Avoid impulse purchases daily
  • Save money by not ordering takeout during the week
  • Transfer savings to the Disney fund monthly
  • Research airfare weekly
  • Reach out to a friend weekly
  • Plan social outings monthly and treat them like an important appointment
  • Plan one-on-one quality time weekly and treat it like an important appointment
  • Try a new activity or restaurant monthly
  • Alternate planning responsibility each month
  • Read for 20 minutes daily
  • Complete 5-6 chapters weekly
  • Read one non-fiction book quarterly
  • Refresher on basic vocabulary, essential phrases, and grammar via Duolingo
  • Watch beginner-level videos with subtitles
  • Share stories or posts linking to products daily
  • Post curated looks daily
  • Analyze sales data monthly
  • Create a new opt-in by the end of February
  • Include a sign-up CTA in posts daily
  • Share exclusive content weekly
  • Offer a free resource monthly

There you have it! These are the steps I will take to achieve my New Year goals. The key will be being consistent. I will allow myself to make adjustments along the way as needed. Oh, and one last tip – don’t forget to celebrate milestones!

  3. This is so good. It's true…if it's not written down, it doesn't happen. At least in my world.
