Why Make the Switch to Clean Lipstick

Did you know that lipsticks, glosses, and balms are one of the most toxic things in our makeup bags? Most of us wear at least one of these products daily, and we’re also reapplying it several times throughout the day. Anything that goes on our lips, we are also ingesting. Every time we eat, drink, or lick our lips, we swallow a small amount of what’s on them. On average, women consume over 3 pounds of lipstick over their lifetimes. While this number is just an average and will vary by each individual, it’s a scary statistic. Lipsticks can contain high amounts of lead, parabens, and other chemicals. Here are reasons why you should switch to non-toxic lipstick.

Does Lipstick Contain Toxins?

Look Out For These Ingredients:

Lead

Lead is a neurotoxin that can be dangerous, even in small doses. Many thought lead in lipsticks was an urban myth until 2007 when the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics tested 33 popular brands ranging from inexpensive drug store to expensive high-end and found that 61% of those contained lead. After pressure from consumers, the FDA conducted follow-up studies that tested 400 brands and found lead levels in those tested four times higher than in the original study.

BHA & BHT

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytolueneย (BHT) are synthetic antioxidants used as preservativesย in lipsticks, moisturizers, and other personal care products. These chemicals are linked to endocrine disruption and organ system toxicity.ย

Butylatedhydroxy Anisole and Butylated Hydroxytoluene

Synthetic antioxidants are used to extend shelf life. They are carcinogens and hormone disruptors and may cause liver damage. Found in: lipsticks, moisturizers, diaper creams, and other cosmetics.

Synthetic flavor or fragrance

An engineered scent or flavoring agent that may contain any combination of 3,000-plus stock chemical ingredients, including hormone disruptors and allergens. Fragrance formulas are protected under federal law’s classification of trade secrets and, therefore, can remain undisclosed. Found in: all types of cosmetics.

Why You Should Switch

Ingredients such as lead will never be on a cosmetics label, so we must align ourselves with companies that are transparent about their ingredients and that are safe for your body and the environment. Luckily more and more options are becoming available to us. Here are ten non-toxic lipstick brands formulated with ingredients that will make you feel good about putting in your body.
