Life Lately [Feb ’25]

What I’ve Been Up To

February was a busy month, here’s my life lately. I had two business trips, one to Nashville and the other to Los Angeles. Nashville was for a regional meeting with my business partners. I had never been to Nashville, but I got to experience a little bit of the city. There is so much talent there, and I loved walking down the street, stopping into a bar, listening to live music for a few songs, and then moving on to the next one.

It was my first time in Los Angeles, too. The company I work for is headquartered there. It was the perfect week to get out of Chicago – the day I left, it was negative 10 degrees, and when I landed in LA, it was 70 degrees. I didn’t get to do many touristy things, but I had some great meals with my co-workers and took the scenic route through Beverly Hills on the way back from a meeting we had in Hollywood.

Did you go out for Valentine’s Day? I can’t remember the last time we did. But we’ve been consistently having Friday night date nights, and my husband got a last-minute reservation at one of our favorite local restaurants.

Products I Tried

Birdies shoes are known for their comfort and tagline, which is that their shoes are secretly slippers on the inside. They sent me the Vesper Faux Fur Loafer to try, and they, indeed, are like wearing slippers. They’re super comfortable and the perfect cold-weather loafer. They are currently 50% off, and you can get them here.

What I’m Watching

We flew through seasons 1 and 2 of Night Action on Netflix. It’s an action thriller about a covert FBI operation designed to handle sensitive undercover operations.

Brandy Melville’s clothing was definitely a cult thing when my daughter was in middle and high school. The Brandy Hellville documentary uncovers the dark side of the brand, including the impact on fast fashion, the toxic work culture, and the company’s discrimination against race and body size.

I watched it Ends with Us on the plane to LA. The movie generally sticks to the storyline of the Colleen Hoover book and the women who seek independence and fight for themselves. Still, it focuses more on the love story than the domestic violence portrayed in the book.

What I’m Reading

I started the year strong by reading three books in January. In February, I only read one book, What Does It Feel Like by Sophie Kinsella. It’s autobiographical and about a novelist who wakes up in the hospital with no idea how she got there and learns that she had a malignant brain tumor removed.

Recipes I Tried

I made this Spinach, Artichoke, and Goat Cheese Quiche crustless, and it was delicious.

This Chicken Hummas Naan Wrap was also easy to make and yummy.

Goals Recap

February goals

Fitness: February challenges: Get back to the gym: strength train 2x/week and swim 1x/week. And, no sweets. Cutting out desserts was easier than I thought. Anytime I craved something sweet, I’d eat a few clementines. I’m not sure what it was about oranges that curbed it, but it worked. I didn’t get to the gym when traveling, but I made it every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday when I was home. The sub-zero temps kept me out of the pool, so I did an extra day of strength training.

Financial: Make an extra car payment and set up a vacation savings account. Done and done!

Relationships: Plan a clothes swap with friends. This is still on my to-do list.

Blog: Create a new opt-in for my newsletter. A new opt-in is still in the works. Post 1x/week on Instagram. Check!

March goals

Fitness: Run/walk 5 days/week to build up to a one-mile run. 5-minute ab exercises daily.

What I’m Looking Forward To Next Month

March is our anniversary month, and we’re spending the weekend in the city and going to see Elvis Costello at a small venue. My daughter is super busy at work at this time of year, but I’d like to make it down for a weekend to visit her next month. And we should be finding out at the end of March if we’ll get a puppy this spring.

Oh, and on the blog, the Blonde Squad will have a fun blog hop on March 18th. We’ll be styling Pantone’s color of the year, Mocha Mousse.

We are heading to Nashville next month for a few days: it is only 3 hours from here and I am starting to make list of what to do and where to eat: any recs for restaurants? When summer comes around, I will need to plan a little anniversary trip for the fall: it's also big birthdays for us: 50 and 55!

  8. You have definitely had a busy month, Jill! I watched that Brandy Melville doc which made me rethink so much about my shopping habits. I haven't read that book by Sophie Kinsella, but I do like her writing. I'll have to look for it.

  9. I can't believe that in a few days February will be over and with it the holidays, sometimes I prefer to go out before or after Valentine's Day because it's always crowded, I loved that pink sweater from the fifth look.

  13. The Sophie Kinsella book was a fast one – I read it in one night.

  14. It sounds like you had such a busy month! Hopefully next time you visit Los Angeles you'll get to do more touristy things there, I've been to LA twice and it still feels like I hardly scratched the surface of everything there is to do! Thanks for sharing, I loved reading this!

That looked like a fun and busy month!

  18. Hey sugar foot, glad you enjoyed your two business trips and had an opportunity to see new terrority and warm up a bit. It has been years since I was in Nashville. I bet I wouldn't even recognize it anymore. Great idea to do a little bar hopping and check out the music scene. Your photos are beautiful.

Thanks for the Netflix recommendations. We started The Blacklist (not sure if it is Netflix) because it has many seasons but have mercy, it has so much VIOLENCE. I am having nightmares. Everyone dies in it!! We have started watching Doc on CBS and it is very good. Might give it a go.

Wasn't the Sophie Kinsella book eye-opening? Bless her sweet heart. I don't know how you go on after a diagnosis like that. Takes a stronger stock than I have.

Love the look and sound of the slipper-like loafers. With this dumb foot, I am going to have to forget heels altogether I think and just start wearing flats. And I need very comfy flats because my foot is still swelling and stiff. Will check them out.
