Is Stitch Fix Worth It?

If you’ve ever struggled to find clothes that fit your style, size, or budget, you may have considered an online personal styling service. There are quite a few out there, but Stitch Fix is one of the most popular. I’ve shared Stich Fix unboxings here, here, and here, and I’ve always found the service to be hit or miss. But when an email from Stitch Fix popped into my inbox last week with a note that they would waive the styling fee, I thought, why not? So, in addition to unboxing my latest Stitch Fix, I thought I’d dive into the pros and cons and whether Stitch Fix is actually worth it.

What is Stitch Fix?

Stitch Fix is a subscription-based styling service that delivers curated clothing and accessories to your doorstep. After completing a detailed style quiz, a personal stylist selects items tailored to your preferences. You pay a $20 styling fee, which is applied to any items you decide to purchase. If you keep all five items in your box, you’ll receive a 25% discount.

Pros of Using Stitch Fix

1. Convenience

One of the biggest advantages of Stitch Fix is its convenience. Say goodbye to scrolling endlessly online. Your stylist does the work for you, and you get to try everything on in the comfort of your home.

2. Personalized Service

When you sign up, you’ll take a quiz covering all your preferences, including sizing, style, and budget. You can leave notes for your stylist before each shipment, too. Over time, the service will become more attuned to your taste as you provide feedback on each item.

3. Access to Unique Brands

Stitch Fix introduces you to brands you might not find at the stores where you usually shop. This is a great way to discover boutique-style pieces that stand out from mainstream options.

4. Preview

Being able to preview pieces before they are sent is extremely helpful. I received an email that my curated pieces were ready for review, and I had 24 hours to make my selections. My preview consisted of ten items, and I could select up to 5 items to receive or leave feedback for my stylist to select new items. Of the ten items, there was only one piece I was interested in, and I asked the stylist to swap out the rest.

5. Free Shipping and Returns

Shipping, returns, and exchanges are free, making it risk-free to try on items. If something doesn’t fit or isn’t your style, simply send it back.

Cons of Using Stitch Fix

1. Styling Fee

The $20 styling fee is non-refundable if you don’t purchase anything. While it’s applied to items you keep, it could feel like a waste if your box doesn’t meet your expectations.

2. Cost

While you can set your price range, many items tend to fall into the mid-to-high price bracket. It might not align with your financial goals if you’re on a tight budget.

3. Limited Control Over Choices

While you can specify preferences, you don’t have complete control over what your stylist selects. If you’re very particular, you might find this frustrating.

4. Inconsistent Results

The quality of your Fix can vary. I’ve often received items that don’t match my style or fit.

5. Commitment Pressure

The three-day time frame to decide can feel rushed, especially if you’re busy. Plus, the 25% discount for keeping all items might tempt you to buy pieces you’re not entirely in love with.

Stitch Fix Clothes

41 Hawthorn Ribbed Mockneck Knit Top – $30

I don’t think Stitch Fix is the platform to buy basics because you can get them anywhere. This top was a little too big, just okay quality-wise, and not worth the $30 price point. I’m wearing it under all four of these outfits.

Verdict: Returned

Vigoss Mia Oversized Denim Shacket – $35

is stitch fix worth it

Shirts with oversized pockets are everywhere this season, and this denim shacket was an item I instantly liked. It’s a great layering piece, and I think it would look cute worn belted.

Verdict: Kept

RD Style Nanumea V-Neck Pullover Sweater – $78

winter stitch fix unboxing

I thought this open-weave pullover was cute and on-trend, and I loved the color, but not the $78 price tag.

Verdict: Returned

Bobeau Kahlani Popcorn Pullover – $27

is stitch fix worth it

I wanted to love this sweater; however, the oversized sleeves were way too long, and they would have bothered me.

Verdict: Returned

LETY & ME Sasha Faux Suede Coatigan $30

winter stitch fix review

This is a great example of items I would have wanted to see more of. It’s unique, cozy, and at an affordable price point.

Verdict: Kept

Checkout Process

The total for the five items was $199, and if I had bought all five pieces, I would have received a 25% discount, bringing the total down to $149. I wanted to note that three of the five items were on sale and did not reflect the pricing I’ve seen in the past.

I had a $62 credit leftover from when I collaborated with Stitch Fix to review their Freestyle Service two years ago. So, if I had kept all five items, my total would have been $87. But, I only kept two items, used my credit, and only had to pay an additional $3.

Final Verdict: Is Stitch Fix Worth It?

In conclusion, Stitch Fix offers a hassle-free way to refresh your wardrobe, but whether it’s worth it depends on your lifestyle, budget, and fashion needs. If you value convenience, it’s a great option. However, it might not be the best fit if you prefer full control over your clothing choices.

You made some great choices – I really like the coatigan. I was thinking of trying the Evereve Trendsetter program – it's kind of fun to have a box of clothes delivered!

  2. I love what you kept as well! I like that they have chic casual pieces. Thanks for sharing all the pros and cons!

  3. Living on Cloud Nine

I’ve been on the fence about these services for years. I love what you kept and that you only had to pay $3! This was a great post explaining how it all works!

  4. Amy Johnson

You definitely kept the right items! I love that denim shirt jacket. I use Stitch Fix a couple times a year, but my items are usually a lot more expensive than yours. Thanks for the party.

I am looking forward to the link up! I hadn't been reading Andrea's blog for a bit and now put it back in my rotation and it's been fun catching up. I have never tried anything like stitch fix and now that I am trying to solely shop 2nd hand, I probably won't, but I do love seeing what people get and keep.

  7. I do find that many of my favorite wardrobe pieces come from Stitch fix but the boxes themselves can be quite hit or miss for me. Out of my latest preview I think I selected one item since all the others looked like other pieces they've already sent me!

  8. I really need to understand why I should order from amazon. Never done it! I'm not a super fan of those boxes to be honest, but i can imagine it is handy.

  9. They sent you some cute pieces, but I think that you kept the two best pieces. They fit into your lifestyle perfectly, and they look great on you. When I worked at Evereve, sometimes I would put together a Trendsend box for someone, and even though they would fill out this big questionnaire, it was so hard to really know whether or not they were going to like it. Anyway, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this, and have a great day! Oh, and yay about the linkup with Andrea!

  10. It's usually hit or miss for me as well. The only item that was in my preview was the green sweater with the too long sleeves!

  11. Its not for everyone. I think it's fun sometimes to see what you'll get!

  12. That denim shacket is SO cute, esp with the leopard pants!! I have had really bad luck with Stitch Fix the last few times, so I haven't gotten one in awhile. I do love their denim so much! You got some really cute pieces, so now you're tempting me to try it again.

  13. I've actually never tried Stitch Fix. I like the price points of the items you got. That denim top is super cute!

This service sounds amazing. I have heard of similar ones and even tried one, one time. It was so nice to try the clothing in the comfort of my home.

  15. It's amazing how I didn't think I'd like this kind of service, but it's truly fun and good for us to get out of certain ruts.

  17. I tried Stitch Fix once and was not impressed. I specifically asked for no sleeveless things, as I live in Northern California, and they sent me 3/5 sleeveless tops and dresses. I feel like if they can’t follow simple directions….not worth it for me.

  18. Hi Jill, great post! I am not a fan of Stitch Fix, but I know many are. I feel like the styles are too plain for my tastes…but for gals who want casual style without having to think too much, it might be a good option.

  19. I haven't ever used a styling service primarily because my body is an odd shape (at least, I think it is). And, I have the time to shop since I'm retired. I love to look at and feel the clothes, too. I think your choices were really good… that denim shacket is so cool! My son tinkered around with my security systems after my blog got hacked, and now I can't access link parties. I'm going to have to have him come over, explain what the problem is, and see if he can fix it! Otherwise, I'd link up!

  20. I haven't done Stitch Fix in years. Probably the price point that has kept me away. Most of the pieces I have received were unique and fit my preferences but were so expensive. I absolutely LOVE the open weave gray-blue sweater on you. The way you styled it!! Wish they would put it 'on sale' and you could snatch it up for half that price. It is really pretty on you. The cropped suede jacket is adorable. You have such a eclectic, individual sense of style…it is YOU. The brown tee/top is a great color for you, too, but it is just a simple top and should be under $20, I would think. Keep watching that blue sweater!! Hope it goes on sale.

  21. Haven't heard of Stitch fix. I would give it a go. Thanks for sharing.

  22. Thank you! I was really surprised that they sent me three pieces that were on sale. I really wish that blue sweater was on sale too. I'm going to have to keep checking!

  23. Oh no! I hope you can get it figured out and linkup this week!

  24. I've had issues like that in the past. And nine of the ten items that were in my preview were way off the mark. There are other options out there so you'd think they'd get it right the first time around!

  25. Sugar Lane

I had not hear about them , thank you for sharirng the pros and cons, really interesting!

  26. My favorites were the blue and brown sweater, I think it's worth it because the clothes are cute!
