Steps to Achieve New Year Goals

steps to achieve goals

Do you make new year’s resolutions? I menioned in my newsletter the other day that I don’t really make them anymore. They always fall by the wayside by the end of February. Instead, this year, I’m setting goals for myself and to help stay on track, monthly challenges related to those goals. The difference between goals and resolutions is creating a clear plan that helps turn them into reality. Today I’m sharing steps to take to achieve your new year’s goals. I’m also sharing my low level goals for 2025. I hope these ideas inspire you!

The one thing I’ve learned over the years from my corporate job is that the foundation of achieving any goal is to make it SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. SMART goals are not just for business, you can use them in your personal life too. SMART goals provide a clear direction and ensure your objectives are realistic and achievable within a given timeframe.

For example, instead of saying, “I want to get fit,” a SMART goal would be, “I will complete two strength-training workouts and three cardio sessions weekly to feel confident wearing shorts by June.” Breaking goals down into these components gives you a precise target to aim for and a way to measure progress along the way.

To use SMART goals effectively:

  • Specific: Define exactly what you want to achieve. Avoid vague or general goals.
  • Measurable: Include metrics or milestones to track progress.
  • Achievable: Set a goal that is challenging but within reach given your resources and time.
  • Relevant: Ensure the goal aligns with your broader values and priorities.
  • Time-bound: Set a clear deadline or timeframe for achieving the goal.

Big goals can feel daunting. You can track progress and stay motivated by breaking them into smaller, manageable tasks or low-level goals. Hereโ€™s how Iโ€™ve structured my low-level goals for this year to help me achieve my big goals.

  • Perform 2โ€“3 shoulder stretches daily
  • Schedule and attend physical therapy sessions weekly
  • Swim once a week
  • Run two times a week – start with one lap around the track and add one lap weekly
  • Celebrate fitness milestones monthly
  • Track spending using a budgeting app
  • Make one additional principal payment monthly
  • Review financial progress monthly
  • Monthly goal: no spend February
  • Avoid impulse purchases daily
  • Save money by not ordering takeout during the week
  • Transfer savings to the Disney fund monthly
  • Research airfare weekly
  • Reach out to a friend weekly
  • Plan social outings monthly and treat them like an important appointment
  • Plan one-on-one quality time weekly and treat it like an important appointment
  • Try a new activity or restaurant monthly
  • Alternate planning responsibility each month
  • Read for 20 minutes daily
  • Complete 5-6 chapters weekly
  • Read one non-fiction book quarterly
  • Refresher on basic vocabulary, essential phrases, and grammar via Duolingo
  • Watch beginner-level videos with subtitles
  • Share stories or posts linking to products daily
  • Post curated looks daily
  • Analyze sales data monthly
  • Create a new opt-in by the end of February
  • Include a sign-up CTA in posts daily
  • Share exclusive content weekly
  • Offer a free resource monthly
  • Host a giveaway quarterly

There you have it! These are the steps I will take to achieve my New Year goals. The key will be being consistent. I will allow myself to make adjustments along the way as needed. Oh, and one last tip – don’t forget to celebrate milestones!

  2. Great post, Jill! Perfect timing for the new year and I agree it's important to be very specific about your goals and I love how you've gone through all of these areas so thoroughly, I need to do this too thanks for the inspiration.

  3. This is so good. It's true…if it's not written down, it doesn't happen. At least in my world.

I am all about a SMART goal – it makes such a difference when we set attainable and measurable goals. I am so impressed with all the goals you set – you are inspiring me!

  5. Same! I have so many things I want to work on in my head but if I don't write them down and track them, they rarely happen!

  6. Such a great post! I love how you broke your goals down into "low level' goals. I need to do the same with mine!

  7. I'm seeing SMART goals all over the place…probably because of the time of year. I'd never heard the term before, but it's very similar to what I had to do when I was a special ed teacher. I love the way you categorized your goals. I do think posting them on our blogs makes us just a wee bit more accountable.

I was listening to a podcast the other day about low level goals: give yourself a goal of the minimum you know you can do and then you can stack on that. I like this!

  9. I like your social goals. I need to prioritize friends more. It's been a really hectic year and unfortunately friends have taken a bit of a back seat.

  10. Very manageable goals. As a teacher I always had to make smart goals. We had to list goals with measurable outcomes and had to provide an action plan and a time frame for everything. My goals are always longer because I try to think of all that stuff!! Once a teacher, I guess…

I didn't realize you are having shoulder issues. PC, too. We are looking into surgery at his doctor's appointment Tuesday. He just had a steroid shot that did very little to help him. Hope your physical therapy and exercises help. I would think swimming would be really good, too. We were doing a lot of swimming for us – anyway – in the summer but his shoulder has gotten worse with the cold weather.

You can get those cars paid off!! Great goal. And setting money aside for Disney will make that trip much more doable. Says the girl with the running Amazon card balance!! I know what I should do but I don't do it because the stupid balance gets ahead of me. This is the year, though!!

  11. I totally agree with you about resolutions! I think it's all about the approach, but I struggled actually keeping up with things when I just stated resolutions. So I do a large list of goals and try to break those down, plus I'm doing a monthly goals this year where I'm doing one thing in particular each day too! Wishing you all the best with your February goals and you did amazing with your yoga last month!!
