How I Keep My Skin Hydrated & Happy in the Winter

winter skincare over 40

Winter weather has a way of wreaking havoc on our skin. One minute, everything’s fine, and the next, your face feels like it’s been through an ice storm begging for hydration. And let’s be honest—our skin isn’t as forgiving as it used to be. Once we hit 40, we need a little extra TLC in our winter skincare routine.

I change my skincare routine seasonally and usually, I change the products I use, too. Today, I’m sharing my winter skincare routine and must-have products that keep my skin glowing, hydrated, and happy all winter long.

MORNING SKINCARE ROUTINE

Let’s get started with my morning over 40 winter skincare routine. I begin with CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser. It’s a gentle formula containing hyaluronic acid to help retain your skin’s natural moisture, but it is also a powerhouse that removes dirt, oil, and makeup.

After I cleanse, I use the Inkey List Hyaluronic Acid Serum. I apply it to my damp skin immediately after cleansing to lock in the moisture.

SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic is one of my favorite vitamin C serums, but it’s pricy. I’ve used it on and off over the years but recently switched to the Inkey Lists Vitamin C Brightening Serum and have found it comparable. It absorbs quickly and, unlike the CE Ferulic (which smelled like hotdogs), it doesn’t have a distinct scent, which I appreciate. And you can’t beat the price.

In between my serums and moisturizer, I apply my eye cream. My winter go-to is the Neocutis Extra Moisturizing Illuminating & Tightening Eye Cream. It’s super hydrating and illuminates the under-eye area, disguising dark circles.

Next, I moisturize with either City Beauty Advanced Action Sculpting Cream or Caudalie
Premier Cru Anti Aging Cream Moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid
. Both are high performance moisturizers that deliver exceptional results.

Finally, I finish up my morning winter skincare routine with Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen. It’s non-greasy, blends easily, and does double duty as a primer.

EVENING SKINCARE ROUTINE

First up, I remove any makeup. Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm is my favorite. It melts off makeup and dirt without stripping your skin. Plus, it feels like a mini spa treatment every time you use it.

Then, I double-cleanse with the same cleanser I used in the morning: CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser and again, immediately apply the Inkey List Hyaluronic Acid Serum on my damp skin.

I use this fan to dry my skin between products and then apply City Beauty’s Concentrated Youth Serum.

Next up is an eye cream, and I either use the Neocutis Extra Moisturizing Illuminating & Tightening Eye Cream or Caudalie Premier Cru Anti-Aging Eye Cream. Caudalie’s rich formula does not feel heavy and melts right into your skin.

I alternate these two moisturizers. Kate Sommerville +Retinol Vitamin C Moisturizer – it resurfaces, firms, and brightens skin while you sleep. City Beauty Barrier Rescue Firming Night Cream – it repairs, hydrates, and plumps.

My last step is applying the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask to my lips. This is one of my winter must-haves, but I use it year-round for soft, hydrated lips. Oh, and if you’re looking for a good dupe, check out Trader Joe’s Vanilla Lip Mask. It’s made with similar ingredients, and is a great pricepoint!

Masks and More

My Sunday routine is applying a series of skincare masks and reading. I start with Masktini Metal Head Gold Brightening Mask followed by Masktini Gone Girl Tahitian Detox Mask and then the Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Mask Extreme Detoxifying Hydrator. I also use my red light therapy mask a few times a week. And love these sheet masks when I travel or for a mid-week pick me up. I’ve neglected my Dermawand and need to start incporporating it back into my routine because it really works if you use it consistently.

Thanks for sharing your recommendations! The weather is all over the place here- it's cold one day and then the high 80's the next – my poor skin doesn't know what to think! I would like to try some of those products from the Inkey List!

Winter is so hard on skin. I especially appreciate this post right now because I've been down with the flu (and now post-flu bronchitis) for 3 weeks! I spent the first two weeks barely doing anything but sleeping and showering, so when I was well enough to put moisturizer on my face for the first time, I could tell my face thought it was an absolute treat! 🙂 It sounds like you've found some great products. Visiting from the Talking About it Tuesday linkup.

  5. I am going to check one of those night cream moisturizers because I need a new one. The Inkey List products are great, but they all started to dry my skin out too much. 🙁 I ended up going back to a Kiehl's eye cream that I used years ago instead. Anyway! Thank you so much for sharing, and stay warm today! XO

  6. I will definitely be checking out that vitamin C serum since mine just ran out. Thanks for sharing these products you like!

  7. I love using a balm as my first cleanse at the end of the day. I've tried Elemis and liked it but not well enough to repurchase it. I'm now using one by Garnier. I just ran out of my second cleanser from Clinique so I've been using up little samples. In fact, I liked one of them so well, I ordered it. It's from Fresh and smells a bit like roses. I love serums and am hooked on The Ordinary. I then follow up with tretinoin and a really good moisturizer. Right now, it's Clarins, but I have Peter Thomas Roth waiting in the wings. I'm an equal opportunity skin junkie!

  8. This is a great, detailed winter skincare routine! I appreciate the specific product recommendations. I also use hyaluronic acid to my damp skin and then do my gua sha massage.

  9. These are great recommendations. I can testify that Hyaluronic Serum is really hydrating.

  10. I mostly just use a full body lotion after showering in winter and add a bit of extra lotion to my hands and feet before going to bed.
